According to a February 27, 2023 announcement issued by the United States patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), beginning April 18, 2023, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will switch to issuing electronic patent grants (eGrants) to patent recipients to reduce paper waste. This is a new process for providing an official copy of a patent grant in an electronic format. For a limited transition period, the USPTO will provide a bound paper version as an official copy, after which only a nominal fee will be charged.

Kathi Vidal, Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, said, "By issuing electronic licenses, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has made considerable progress toward a more environmentally conscious operation. The electronic approval process not only minimizes paper waste, but also benefits stakeholders by reducing overhangs and streamlining the process. It's a win-win for the institution and our clients."

The electronic authorization process significantly reduces the USPTO's printing and mailing needs, potentially reducing patent pending issues and saving the agency nearly $2 million in annual printing and mailing costs. In addition, under the new process, patent recipients will receive electronic patent authorization in PDF format on the day of publication.

During the transition period, patent recipients will receive an official copy of the electronic authorization at the Patent Center and receive a bound paper version as an official copy. Patent recipients can still request a certified copy of the USPTO and a copy of the presentation from the USPTO's Certified Copy Center for an additional fee. Unlimited free e-licensed copies can also be printed from the USPTO's online Patent Center. The agency has provided electronic trademark registration certificates to
